2013 NVGP Saint Paul Criterium

Stage 2 of the Nature Valley Grand Prix was the Saint Paul Criterium. The women contested 28 laps and the men completed 40 laps of the course running through downtown Saint Paul past Mickey’s Diner and around the Landmark Center. Lauren Hall (Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) won the stage and convincing fashion as some riders including race leader Carmen Small (Specialized-lululemon) where involved in crash going into the final turn. With time bonuses on the line newly crowned US Pro Road National Champion Jade Wilcoxson (Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) took over the race lead and has a 2 second advantage over Small heading into stage 3 in Cannon Falls. On the men’s side Jelly Belly did a good job of controlling the race with help from Optum and the CashCall Mortgage. The California Giant/ Specialized team was very active constantly sending riders off on attacks. In the end the Jamis Hagens Berman p/b Sutter Home squad came to the front with just a few laps left and their sprinter Juan Jose Haedo won convincingly over Mike Friedman (Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) and Freddie Rodriguez (Jelly Belly p/ b Kenda). Serghei Tvetcov added some time via the time bonus sprints to hold onto the race lead and now leads Mike Friedman (Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) by 6 seconds heading into stage 3.
